Advancing Precision in Aerospace Coatings Research  

This month CCAM shines a light on Kaitlyn McMillan, whose internship with the organization started in the Spring 2025 and will conclude at the end of the Spring 2026. Kaitlyn is a Chemical and Life Science Engineering major at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she is also minoring in Nuclear Engineering. Beyond her academic roles, she serves as the Team Lead for Recovery Operations with VCU’s Ram Rocketry team and recently competed in the Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC).

At CCAM, Kaitlyn has contributed to an industry-sponsored research effort focused on improving quality control in aerospace coatings. Her primary project involves using ImageJ to analyze high-resolution microscopy images and measure layer height variations in printed components. This work helps CCAM and its partners better understand process consistency at the microscopic scale and is critical for advancing precision manufacturing.

In addition to her technical analysis, Kaitlyn supported the acquisition and onboarding of new laboratory equipment, ensuring it aligns with research and safety requirements. She also played a key role in preparing documentation for a quality and technical audit, organizing and presenting materials that demonstrate compliance with applicable standards.

Throughout the internship, Kaitlyn has strengthened her skills in data analysis by developing and applying custom macros to streamline image processing. She has also gained experience interpreting and applying ISO standards, an essential competency for engineers working in regulated environments.

After completing her internship, Kaitlyn plans to finish her degree, take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and pursue certification as an Engineer in Training (EIT).

Outside of her academic and research pursuits, Kaitlyn enjoys playing video games, soccer, and hiking.
