Mission & Vision
CCAM IS a resourceful and IP-friendly environment creating solutions to complex advanced manufacturing challenges. We are the center of an academic, government, and industry ecosystem where partnerships create real economic value. Our staff and researchers play an active role in developing the most talented manufacturing workforce by providing a diverse and industry-driven educational pathway.
CCAM WILL BE recognized globally as an innovation campus where industry, academia and government solve advanced manufacturing challenges and grow a qualified manufacturing workforce ecosystem.
Founded in 2011 under a public-private partnership, the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM – pronounced: see-KAM) is an applied research center and not-for-profit 501c3 with membership from industry, university and government. CCAM is an economic development project dating back to 2007 when the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, University of Virginia and Virginia Tech participated in a joint proposal to bring Rolls-Royce’s engine manufacturing factory to Virginia. They succeeded, and four years later, adjacent to Rolls-Royce’s campus, CCAM opened its doors as a resource for regional manufacturers to improve their manufacturing capabilities.
CCAM is a not-for-profit, membership-based scientific, research and educational corporation exempt from federal taxation under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
This status and the structure of CCAM allows multiple universities and companies to collaborate in a research consortium, saving members valuable resources by accessing pooled talent, tools and technology to improve methodologies and increase product introductions.
Members and CCAM’s university partners govern CCAM operations through board participation determined by membership level: Board of Directors, Industrial Operations Board (IOB) and Technical Advisory Council (TAC).
CCAM is a proud member of America Makes, Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute (ARM), Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII – The Smart Manufacturing Institute), and more.
