Developing Technical Workforce of Tomorrow

Virginia Intern Day Badge

For the third consecutive year, the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM) has been selected as one of Virginia’s 2024 Top Employers for Interns. The recognition comes from the Virginia Talent + Opportunity Partnership (V-TOP), which today announced 136 recipients of the 2024 Top Virginia Employers for Interns Awards. Administered by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia in collaboration with the Virginia Chamber of Commerce Foundation and the Virginia Business Higher Education Council, V-TOP acknowledges organizations that prioritize fostering talent and creating valuable opportunities for interns.

At CCAM, our mission revolves around creating opportunities for research solutions and innovation to address today’s most pressing advanced manufacturing challenges. In doing so, we also prioritize the development of the technical workforce of tomorrow. Our internship program serves as a cornerstone of this mission, providing interns with the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge in practical, real-world settings.

Each intern at CCAM is paired with a seasoned CCAM researcher whose expertise aligns with the technical area the Intern wishes to enhance and develop. Engaging in hands-on research, Interns work on projects that have real-world applications, contributing to significant advancements in the field of advanced manufacturing. Our collaborative approach encourages Interns to work closely with CCAM Researchers and fellow Interns from various disciplines, fostering a culture of knowledge-sharing and skill-building.

“My CCAM internship taught me how to work in a team of drastically different skillsets. Both in school and in previous employment, I had very little ability to work with those outside of the computer/data science departments, but at CCAM, researchers are each skilled at their specializations and work together in cross-department teams to complete some impressively diverse projects. With my programming background, I had no experience in the manufacturing world when I arrived, and other researchers here may not have much experience in data science, and we all have different day-to-day work. So, there’s a lot we all learn from each other, whether you’re an intern or have been here for years. I’ve always felt like an important member of the team with value to contribute.” Reagan Orth, CCAM Alumni 2023

CCAM Project Manager, Grant Sowels, said of CCAM’s Internship program, “CCAM gave me the support during undergrad to successfully complete my degree program and design/present an advanced manufacturing senior project. The information I received and access to high quality research, knowledge, and mentorship provided me with the tools I needed to pursue an advanced degree. These skills allowed me to have a successful early career in engineering operations management opening the door to ultimately return to CCAM as a project manager.”

Being recognized as one of Virginia’s Top Employers for Interns reflects CCAM’s dedication to providing valuable opportunities for students to apply their knowledge, gain practical experience, and contribute to significant advancements. As CCAM continues its mission of excellence in research and education, it looks forward to furthering its impact on the future of advanced manufacturing and empowering the technical workforce of tomorrow.
